Editor: School of Mechatronical Engineering, Wang Chong

Professor Bert Sluys, from Delft University of Technology, Holland, was invited to visit the School of Mechatronical Engineering from November 20th to 26th. Dean of School of Mechatronical Engineering Chen Pengwan and associated director of International Office Gao Shan met with Bert Sluys on November 24th. Chen Pengwan welcomed Sluys’s first visit and introduced general situation of school. Gao Shan reviewed good cooperation foundation between BIT and DUT and hoped to establish a long-term, friendly and cooperative relation with DUT in future. Both sides also exchanged views on possible future collaborative ways.

During Sluys's visit, he gave the students a lecture named as "Muti-scale modelling of localised failure processes". In the lecture, he emphasized the demonstrations on the material failure modellings at micro, meso and macro scales. He established a multi-scale computational method for modelling the damage of composite materials in terms of representative volume element (RVE), and improved the computational modelling of simulating the soft materials. His lecture evoked a heated discussion among the students and teachers present.
